Expansions and Additions

April 9, 2018

At Baseline it is common for our customers to return a few years later requesting expansions on their original solar installation or an additional system all together. One of those customers is David Mitchell, who received his first solar installation in 2016 and has returned for both an expansion and an additional system!

Expansion

In 2016 we designed and installed a 7.7 kW grid-tied system on David’s home. This consisted of 27,285 Watt SolarWorld solar panels on a metal roof with an SMA SunnyBoy grid-tied inverter. David and his family have offset a significant percentage of their usage since 2016, but with an increase in their electrical usage around the property they contacted us to add on to the array! Taking into account available roof space and inverter capacity, we decided to add 12 panels to the system. These 12 panels will increase annual solar electricity production by about 40%, and we were able to connect the additional panels to the existing inverter without having to upgrade it, saving time and money. All of the work was completed on the roof in less than 4 hours!

Our team also installed a backup power receptacle with the inverter, which can power up to 2,000 Watts during a grid outage without the use of batteries!

Off-grid

Since the 2016 install on the house, David built a detached garage that has living quarters above it, with plans to make it completely off-grid with solar and batteries. The family homestead includes gardens and small livestock, and they often have farm volunteers on site (see WWOOF). A solar powered apartment is the perfect lodging! We reviewed the site and designed a 1.7 kW PV array connected to a Schneider 4,000 Watt pure sine wave off-grid inverter. This system also includes a Relion 48V 100 Ah lithium iron phosphate battery, which stores about 5 kW of usable energy, plenty of energy to run through cloudy days, and plenty of solar power to recharge the battery! For off-grid applications lithium batteries offer several great features including:

  • 100% usable capacity

  • No maintenance, no gasses to vent, and no watering

  • Long life cycle

  • Safe chemistry

  • Smaller footprint than lead batteries

In Conclusion

Whether you are looking to add more panels to your existing system, add some batteries, or even install your first solar array, Baseline Solar can guide you through the process! Give us a call today to discuss your project!
